This school year marks 25 years since SAM’s reopening in the year 2000. This past week we celebrated God’s faithfulness to our school and the many incredible groups of kids who have passed through our doors!
The school actually was opened in 1966ish as a boarding school. (It closed in 1980 before reopening in its current state as a day school.) The land was bought by a man named Jack Hough who saw it and envisioned the ministry that could happen here. As others saw a need for a school for missionary children whose parents were out in the jungle, a boarding school was built on the land. Originally, however, people called the land “Jack’s Folly” because of its location outside the city in the jungle. It seemed to be just a worthless bit of useless land.
“Jack’s Folly,” however, has weathered over half a century of city growth and seen the incredible faithfulness of God as His Word has been fruitfully carried into the far reaches of this region and beyond.
How incredible is it that the fact I can step into my classroom each morning started with one man’s vision and obedience to God sixty years ago. Psalm 90:15 contains a cry of Moses asking God to “Establish the work of our hands.” Won’t it be exciting to one day see what God has established with the work of our own hands and hearts when we act in obedience to Him!
So we continue in this amazing work of “loving-on” and discipling the children of God’s workers here in Pucallpa–while spreading His beautiful gospel outward as well.
In February, our High School students did a week of ministry aboard the boat “Evangelista” with a group from Carmel Christian school in NC. The mornings of this camp/VBS ministry for the students were spent in Bible sessions and worship, while afternoons included preparing for ministry outreach in the mestizo community “Providencia.” The kids stepped up to the task of learning new games, songs and choreography in just a short time though the repetition constant rehearsal did lead to some bad cases of earworms. (You can google that particular “parasite” if you aren’t sure what it is…insert smiley face) These ministry trips allow OUR students to get out and reach OTHER kids for Christ, while growing in their own faith as they put that faith into action.
While they were gone, the elementary and Middle School took their own little field trip to learn more about the incredible wild life here in the jungle. This was super fun as we have a few students who have just recently moved to Pucallpa.
Prior to that, November and December passed by in a blur! In preparation for the Christmas season, I (Marcy) spent time with the Impacto Senior Citizen ministry and made a Christmas craft. This year we made snow globes but they were super special because we had the “Abuelitos” dress up in winter clothes and then put their pictures inside the craft! This is the only way many of these men and women will experience snow in their lifetime! I absolutely love working with the Impacto members. They are always so grateful and loving.
In December, we held a choir program and our Christmas Outreach. Though these event happen every year, I love how they are special and unique each year. Our high school/middle school choir hosted the English service at the Iglesia Misionera de Pucallpa. It was a beautiful evening of sharing the message of Christmas and then getting to know the people who attended afterwards.
For our Christmas Outreach this year we partnered with a local family to bless a public orphanage. For child safety reasons we didn’t take many pictures. It was hot…and crowded…and so very, very worth it. The children there were mainly older children who have mostly lost out on their hope of adoption. I wondered, them being older, if they would even enjoy the program. But as our kids and staff spread out interacting with them in games and talking with them, more and more smiles appeared. We shared homemade cookies and gifts that some opened and some saved to open on Christmas day. Even though this wasn’t a Christian orphanage, we were also able to share the gospel message of Christmas in a sweet way. Please pray for these beautiful souls.
Twenty-five years later, SAM Academy keeps going. God’s faithfulness is fulfilled in your prayers and support. So keep those prayers coming! Here are some things to lift up…
It is toward the end of rainy season, but some areas of Peru have been devasted by flooding. Arequipa is suffering particularly. This city, where many of our missionaries go for language training, normally doesn’t experience rain so the flooding has been catastrophic.
Pray for our class of 2026 who are applying and make decisions about college. We have five amazing young adults who are getting ready to step out into adulthood. Pray for God’s peace, provision and direction as they plan.
Please pray for Mike as he has been administrating while teaching all the upper level Science and Math classes. His schedule has been extremely full. We are praying to end the year strong so please pray for his energy and for wisdom as he leads our school.
Continue praying for the Gopolan family who will join us next year as they support raise and prepare to leave the US this summer.
On a personal note, you can say a little prayer for Ella. We are so proud of her and how she is doing! Winter has been rough on our little jungle bunny though so please pray she receives a little extra boost to get her through. We are excited she will come to Pucallpa this summer to visit!
Dear friends, may our love reach you from here in Pucallpa to where ever this newsletter finds you!
